With a weekend domestic box office of $175.3 million – and the second highest opening weekend of all time – Iron Man 3 is clearly a success. Combined with the worldwide box office earnings, the latest hit from Marvel has earned $675 million in less than two weeks.
The success of Iron Man 3 means The Walt Disney Studios has once again crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office. This marks the 19th year in a row that this has happened, and it also sets a new “speed record” for the Studio. On the heels of the record breaking opening weekend of the film, Disney shares shot up 0.7% to $65.28 in pre-market trading on May 6.
Last weekend wasn’t just the second biggest domestic opening weekend; the movie also set biggest opening weekend records around the world in countries including Argentina, Thailand, South Africa, and Hong Kong. It was also the biggest opening for Marvel in more than 15 territories.
Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall, Ben Kingsley, and Guy Pierce. The film was directed by Shane Black.
