Walt Disney Animation Studios has announced its 56th animated feature film – Moana.
The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2016, two years ahead of the originally announced release date of 2018.
The film is a CG-animated comedy-adventure that tells the story of a spirited teenager on a mission to fulfill her ancestor’s quest.
The film is set in the ancient South Pacific world of Ocenia where Moana sets sail in search of a fabled island. She teams up with her hero the demi-god Maui and they encounter sea creatures and other ancient folklore in their journeys.
Moana is being directed by Ron Clements and John Musker the team behind The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, and Aladdin.
“John and I have partnered on so many films—from ‘The Little Mermaid’ to ‘Aladdin’ to ‘The Princess and the Frog,’” said Clements. “Creating ‘Moana’ is one of the great thrills of our career. It’s a big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania.”
