This week, we let you know that the highly anticipated sequel to The Muppets has finally received a theatrical release date of March 14, 2014. Recently, some more exciting news was revealed about the film, including an incredibly exciting bit of casting news and the film’s official working title.
While up until now, the untitled film has simply been referred to as “the Muppets sequel” or The Muppets 2, we recently learned that the film now has an official working title: The Muppets…Again. News of the straightforward, yet Muppety, title was first reported by the website SlashFilm, and later confirmed by Muppet fan site The Muppet Mindset. The tentative title has not yet been officially confirmed by Disney.
Although the main focus of The Muppets…Again will be on the zany antics of the beloved Muppets themselves, we’ve been getting some interesting casting news over the past few weeks about the human stars that will be joining them on screen. Already confirmed for the film are Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell, but recently, it was revealed that another major celebrity is in negotiations to join the film: Tina Fey. The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that Fey is in late stage negotiations to play the film’s female human lead, a character described as a “Russian femme fatale.” Fey, who previously appeared with some Muppety friends in an appearance on Sesame Street, recently completed production on her acclaimed television series 30 Rock, and will star in the upcoming film Admission this March. Always hilarious and incredibly talented, Tina Fey would no doubt make an excellent companion to the Muppets, and we hope this exciting casting choice becomes official soon.
Finally, this week also brought us our first look at Ricky Gervais with his Muppet co-stars. Gervais, whose role in the new film will be comparable to Jason Segel’s role in The Muppets, has recently taken to Twitter to express his excitement about the new movie. Last weekend, Gervais, who hosted the Golden Globes for three consecutive years, wished 2013 Golden Globes co-hosts Fey and Amy Poehler good luck on Twitter and attached a picture of him with some Hollywood stars: Kermit and Miss Piggy. Here’s the tweet:
These new bits of information make us even more excited for this new film, and we can’t wait to hear more about what the movie has in store. The Muppets…Again will debut in theaters March 14, 2014.
