For the past 13 years, Disney’s The Lion King has delighted theatre audiences on London’s West End. Now, Disney Theatrical Productions will bring the long-running show to audiences all around the UK, as it was announced that a separate UK national tour is set to begin this August.
The national tour will begin performances August 31, 2012 at the Bristol Hippodrome, with an official opening date of September 6. The show will play an 11-week run there before transferring to Manchester’s Palace Theatre, where it will play from December 1-March 31, 2013, with an official opening night of December 6. From there, the show will visit eight more cities throughout the UK and Ireland over a period of two-and-a-half years. Dates for these further stops are not yet available.
In a statement, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions Thomas Schumacher said:
“We continue to be thrilled by how UK audiences have enjoyed The Lion King in London, and have long wished to also share this production with audiences nationally. Following years of planning, and after receiving the counsel of some very smart friends in the British theatre world, we are delighted to be launching a production that conveys Julie Taymor’s epic vision and at a moment that feels absolutely right.”
