Disney has officially announced a sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins, with Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda starring.
The film, titled Mary Poppins Returns, is slated for a December 25, 2018 release and will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods).
The screenplay, written by David Magee, will be based on the Mary Poppins stories written by P.L. Travers.
Blunt (Into the Woods) stars as Mary Poppins and Miranda (Hamilton) will play a new character named Jack, a street lamplighter.
The story will take place in Depression-era London and will follow Jane and Michael Banks – who are now adults. They are visited by Mary Poppins after a personal loss. According to reports Mary Poppins will help the family “rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”
The film will feature an original score by Marc Shaiman and original songs from Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
