While Newsies doesn’t officially open on Broadway until March 29, the show’s future on the Great White Way already looks pretty bright. The show, which began performances at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on March 15, has already announced that the show’s limited run will be extended through August 19, 2012.
Following its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall, Newsies was originally scheduled for a strictly limited 101-performance run through June 10. The show, which stars Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly, is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899. Here’s the show’s official description:
“Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.”
