Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University graduated at the top of its class, earning an $82 million during its debut weekend in theaters.
This marks the 14th number one opening weekend for Pixar at the box office. The Disney-owned studio has only released 14 films, which means every film released by Pixar has opened in first place.
Monsters University was playing in 4,004 theaters in the U.S. during its debut weekend and the $82 million box office makes it the second biggest opening for Pixar, just behind Toy Story 3 which earned $110.3 million in June 2010. Monsters Inc. opened in 2001 with $62.6 million.
Disney reports that 60 percent of MU audiences were below the age of 25, and families made up 73 percent of the business with teens accounting for 15 percent of the audience. Monsters University also took in $54.5 million internationally in 35 territories, bringing its total debut weekend box office to $136.5 million in three days.
