Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier Hulk-smashed box office records during its opening weekend.
The film opened domestically on April 3 and made $96.2 million, giving it the biggest April debut of all time. The Thursday night screenings brought in $10.2 million alone, and the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday box office receipts broke daily records for the month of April.
Overseas the film opened in the No. 1 spot in Russia, China, and Australia. It set a new record in China – making it Disney’s biggest debut in that country.
And the box office receipts keep growing – the film is open in 50 territories worldwide and has earned $209.1 million in one week. When it surpasses $304.1 million globally it will have made more money than the entire first run of the original film.
Adding to the ongoing success of Marvel films, it was announced this week that Captain America 3 will be released on May 6, 2016.
Captain America: The Winter Solider is the sequel to the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. It stars Chris Evans as the World War II era superhero.
The red, white, and blue superhero will also be seen in next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron which opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.
