More casting news was released this week for Disney’s upcoming live-action film adaptation of Cinderella, as it was announced that Helena Bonham Carter has been cast in the film. Bonham Carter will be playing the Fairy Godmother who enables Cinderella, played by Lily James, to go to the ball.
This is far from the first time that Bonham Carter has worked with Disney, having appeared as the Red Queen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and, most recently, in the upcoming Disney film The Lone Ranger. Bonham Carter’s role as the Fairy Godmother is said to be expanded in this film, with the Godmother first appearing as a beggar woman who watches over Cinderella before revealing her true identity.
In addition to Bonham Carter and James, Cinderella will also star Cate Blanchett as the Wicked Stepmother, Richard Madden as the Prince, and Sophie McShera and Holliday Granger as the stepsisters. Filming for Cinderella, which is directed by Kenneth Branagh, is currently set to begin in London this fall, with the film currently slated for release in 2014.
