Last week, the winner of Disney’s Planet Challenge was announced – congratulations to the Year 6 class of Cayman Prep & High School in the Cayman Islands! The winners were honored aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship in Grand Cayman for their class project, which dealt with protecting the threatened swallowtail butterfly – a species that can only be found there.
To help further their conservation efforts, the winning students worked to raise funds and awareness of the native swallowtail butterfly and its habitat. Additionally, the children planted several lime trees, which provide much-needed food and shelter for this endangered species. The students also distributed and planted many lime seeds across their community in an effort to provide a save haven for the swallowtail butterfly for years to come.
An official ceremony, hosted by Disney Captain John Barwis and Captain Mickey Mouse, was held to honor the students and their teacher, Andy Jones, in recognition of their environmental achievements.
With sponsorship through the Disney Cruise Line and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Department of Education and Department of the Environment, Disney’s Planet Challenge continues to make an annual impact with their program designed to help empower kids to be more environmentally friendly and aware.
