On Earth Day 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened to the public. This year marks the theme park’s 15th anniversary and guests can celebrate the milestone with special events scheduled for Earth Day 2013.
Kicking off the celebration is a special opening ceremony at the Tree of Life, the iconic symbol of the park. Guests attending the opening ceremony will be greeted by Josh D’Armo, the Vice President of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Dr. Jackie Ogden, Vice President of Animals, Science and Endowment, and Joe Rhode, Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering Creative. The ceremony begins at 8:40 a.m. on April 22.
In addition, guests can enjoy special Earth Day “Party for the Planet” activities from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Earth Day. These activities will focus on animals and nature, and are included with theme park admission.
Artists and vendors will be selling their featured work throughout Africa and Discovery Island during the anniversary celebration, and special commemorative theme park merchandise will be available for purchase in limited quantities.
The celebration isn’t limited to Earth Day. This weekend in Glendale, California, D23 members are invited to meet Animal Kingdom Imagineers, including Joe Rhode. D23 members will get a chance to have an interactive day with the Imagineers and learn more about the creation of the Animal Kingdom. For information on this event visit the D23 website.
