The Australian-born actor Laurie Main, best known for his role as the host and narrator of the live-action Disney Channel series Welcome to Pooh Corner, died February 8 at the age of 89.
Other notable roles included the voice of Dr. Watson in the 1986 Disney flick The Great Mouse Detective, as well as narrating several Winnie the Pooh shorts. Main also provided his voice to many of Disney’s Read-Along cassettes and CD’s, and acted in several Disney movies in the 70’s including Freaky Friday, The Strongest Man in the World, and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.
Main left home at the age of 16, where he initially moved to England and then to the United States. Once in the States, he studied under Agnes Moorehead and made his debut on Broadway in 1959 in First Impressions. He also played opposite Eartha Kitt that same year in Jolly’s Progress.
