On Wednesday, China’s video-on-demand service You On Demand reached an agreement with The Walt Disney Company to show Disney films, ranging from classic titles such as The Lion King and Mary Poppins to more recent flicks like War Horse.
The movies will be available via their subscription service, and Chinese viewers can expect to shell out anywhere from $1 to $3 to watch the Disney films.
You On Demand is the brainchild of Shane McMahon, the son of World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon. The service launched last year and is currently in 3 million Chinese homes. Says McMahon:
We’re changing the way a nation views content. We’re helping show China what works not just in the U.S., but all over the world and we’re educating the consumers about where to find the best content.
McMahon also said he expects the number of homes with You On Demand should increase to 11 million by the end of the year.
