Each year, the Tony Awards celebrate Broadway and the theatre, honoring the season’s top shows, creative teams, and performers in a nationally broadcast awards ceremony. This week, the nominees for the 2012 Tony Awards were announced, and this year’s Disney-produced shows were not forgotten. Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher earned a combined total of 17 nominations, including nominations in the top honors of Best Play and Best Musical.
Peter and the Starcatcher, the enchanting new play that tells the story of Peter Pan before he became the legendary Lost Boy we know today, earned nine nominations, the most of any play this season. The show earned the following nominations:
- Best Play
- Best Musical Score Written for the Theatre: Wayne Barker and Rick Elice
- Best Performance By an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play: Christian Borle
- Best Performance By an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play: Celia Keenan-Bolger
- Best Direction of a Play: Alex Timbers and Roger Rees
- Best Scenic Design of a Play: Donyale Werle
- Best Costume Design of a Play: Paloma Young
- Best Lighting Design of a Play: Jeff Croiter
- Best Sound Design of a Play: Darron L West
Newsies, the thrilling new musical based on the 1992 film of the same name, also had a strong showing, earning eight nominations. The show is up for the following awards:
- Best Musical
- Best Book of a Musical: Harvey Fierstein
- Best Original Score Written for the Theatre: Alan Menken and Jack Feldman
- Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical: Jeremy Jordan
- Best Direction of a Musical: Jeff Calhoun
- Best Choreography: Christopher Gattelli
- Best Orchestrations: Danny Troob
- Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel
