This week, Disney will be introducing the first Disney Princess that isn’t an adult – Princess Sofia.
Sofia the First, a new t.v. show debuting this week on Disney Junior and Disney Channel, will be aimed at kids ages 2 to 7. While the company is well aware of the potential for criticism with this latest princess, Disney has emphasized that Princess Sofia will teach kids age-appropriate themes, including how to get along with others and learning to be kind and generous.
Says Nancy Kanter, general manager for Disney Junior Worldwide:
Sofia will have plenty of pretty dresses and sparkly shoes, but episodes will teach children that what makes a real princess is what’s inside, not what’s outside.
In focus groups, Kanter says that the reactions were very positive. “We saw girls have an instant relatability to this character,” Kanter says. “If kids relate to what they watch, that’s where real learning can start.”
