Despite the underperformance of The Lone Ranger, Disney reached a major milestone this week, as their domestic box office grosses officially hit the $1 billion mark. This is the eighth year in a row that Disney has been the first studio to reach this milestone.
Disney’s box office success this year has been primarily driven by the success of only three films: Iron Man 3, Monsters University, and Oz: The Great and Powerful. Those three films alone have also managed to gross over $2 billion internationally thus far, and Disney was the first studio to pass the $1 billion mark internationally this year as well.
However, it looks like Disney’s box office successes are still far from over for the year. The Lone Ranger only marks Disney’s fourth release of the year, with six films still yet to debut from the studio in 2014, including Thor: The Dark World, Frozen, and Saving Mr. Banks.
