Last year, we brought you news of a new Disney Channel Original Movie Let It Shine, a modern-day take on the classic story Cyrano de Bergerac. The film premieres this summer and we’ve just heard that Dawnn Lewis, best known for her role on A Different World, will be playing a preacher’s wife who also happens to be the mother of the main character.
The gospel-themed musical introduces us to Cyrus DeBarge, a musically gifted teen who writes rap verses to the girl he’s interested in. Unfortunately, Cyrus’s friend claims the lyrics as his own and ends up snagging the girl of Cyrus’s dreams. Cyrus also happens to be the church’s Minister of Music.
Says Lewis:
We turn our praise team over to him and he comes back into church with the praise and worship team singing and dancing, breakdancing and doing hip hop praise music in the sanctuary. We’re not quite sure how to deal with that. It’s a little harder for my husband than it is for me.
The rest of the cast includes Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris) as Cyrus, Coco Jones, Trevor Jackson, Brandon Mychal Smith, Nicole Sullivan, Courtney B. Vance, and Jacob DeBarge.
Let It Shine premieres June 15 at 8 p.m. on Disney Channel.
