Barneys have released a mock-up of their intended Christmas window display, which features iconic Disney characters like Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald and Daisy re-imagined as tall, super-skinny models.
Several celebrities – including Sideways star Virginia Madsen and Disney heiress Abigail Disney – have added their names to a petition to scrap the holiday display, believing it sends the wrong message to young girls.
While the petition does its best to make it clear that there’s nothing wrong with tall, thin women, the petitioners believe there is something wrong with taking an iconic character’s body and changing it to “fit a dress almost no one looks good in.”
Says the petition:
Girls have enough pressure to be thin, now the beloved Disney mouse of their childhood has to add to the message that the only good body is a tall, size 0 body? Enough already. Let’s give girls a chance to celebrate the actual bodies they have instead (of) hating them for not fitting into a (designer) Lanvin dress.
