The 2015 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend has wrapped up and for the second year in a row Brazilian runner Fredison Costa crossed the finish line first.
The Walt Disney World Marathon is Central Florida’s largest sporting event and throughout the weekend more than 100,000 runners and fans were at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The event’s for this year’s race weekend included the Family Fun Run 5K, the runDisney Kids Races, the Walt Disney World 10K, the half marathon, and the full marathon. Additional events included the 10th anniversary of Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge and the Dopey Challenge.
More than 80,000 people registered for the weekend’s races including: 26,700 for the marathon, 12,700 for the 10K, and 12,800 for the 5K. More than 6,500 runners participated in Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge while 7,600 registered for the Dopey Challenge.
Brazilian runner dominated the marathon finish line with Trindade Mateus coming in second, Joao Fonseca finishing third, and past marathon champ Adriano Bastos finished fourth. This year was the 11th straight year that a Brazilian has won the marathon. Giovanna Martins, also of Brazil, was the top female finisher coming in at 2:50:20.
The next runDisney event at Walt Disney World is February’s Disney’s Princess Half Marathon.
