Last week, ABC Family started production on a brand-new comedy pilot, Phys Ed. The new series focuses on Ed, a former high school star athlete who returns to his alma mater to teach. Once there, however, he realizes that while he may have changed since graduation, nothing else really has.
Phys Ed is a half-hour multi-camera comedy that will be shot in Los Angeles. Starring in the series will be Ryan Sypek as Ed, who previously appeared in the ABC Family series Wildfire. Joining Sypek as Ed’s new colleagues on the show will be Katie Lang Johnson (Persons Unknown) as Janie, a Government teacher who, while ignored by Ed in high school, now finds herself “drawn to his affections;” Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks) as Matt, a chemistry teacher who befriends Ed and fills him in on the school gossip; Sunkrish Bala (I Just Want My Pants Back) as Alan, a popular English teacher who’s used to being the alpha male at school and feels threatened by Ed; and Chelsea Harris (Grey’s Anatomy) as Wendy, the cheerleading coach and history teacher who is rumored to be having an affair with Alan.
The series is executive produced by David H. Steinberg (American Pie 2) and directed by Ted Wass (Melissa & Joey). Stay tuned for more news on this possible new series.
