News that we first brought to you in January has now been confirmed: Disney Pixar said Tuesday that their followup to the smash hit Monsters, Inc., originally referred to as Monsters, Inc. 2, will be a prequel. The title of the new film is Monsters University, the company shared at CinemaCon, held this week in Las Vegas.
The latest installment in the Monsters, Inc. franchise will tell the story of how Sulley and Mike Wazowski forged their friendship while classmates at Monstropolis’ University of Fear, with a few interesting twists thrown in.
Disney’s executive vice president of worldwide distribution, Dave Hollis, had this to say about the upcoming film:
Obviously everybody knows at this point Mike and Sully [sic] are amazing friends—the best of friends—but as it turns out, in this story, that wasn’t always the case.
From the moment they met at university, they could not stand each other. This story takes you through the ups and downs, and how they overcame their own differences.
It will definitely be interesting to see how Monsters University unfolds. According to Disney insider Floyd Norman, Pixar was going to screen the film at Disney’s lot in Burbank, albeit a very early storyboard version. “Welcome back, Mike and Sulley, we’ve missed you,” he tweeted. “Yeah, you too, Randall.”
Monsters University is currently scheduled to open November 2, 2012.
