Disney’s animated hit Frozen broke the $500 million mark at the box office before the end of 2013, making it the fourth Disney film to reach that milestone last year.
The movie opened Thanksgiving weekend in the United States and has earned a hefty $250 million at the domestic box office since then. The other $250 million has come from the international box office. That means the $500 million box office total was earned in just six weeks.
The other Disney movies to reach the $500 million mark in 2013 were Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Monsters University.
As we reported last month, the success of these films helped Disney break the $4 billion mark at the box office in 2013.
Frozen has been breaking records since it opened – it earned $93.6 million on its opening weekend, making it the biggest opening for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film. That opening weekend haul also broke the record set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001 and it beat the box office numbers for Tangled which grossed $68.1 million during its 2010 Thanksgiving weekend debut.
And there are more records to break. Disney’s The Lion King earned $422 million in 1994 during its 26-week run in theaters, but if Frozen continues on its current track, it could end up being Disney’s biggest animated film ever.
