Despite a slight bump in the road thanks to a certain masked ranger, this year has been a rather great year for The Walt Disney Studios.
Earlier this month, the Studios set yet another company record when it reached an all-time high at the domestic box office breaking the previous record of $1.547 billion set in 2012.
The domestic box office record means the Studio was a triple threat this year, breaking records internationally, globally, and domestically.
In November, the Studio announced it reached the $4 billion mark, surpassing the $3.791 billion mark that it set back in 2010. This year’s results have been driven by the success of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 which earned $1.21 billion making it the year’s top grossing film, and the fifth highest grossing film ever.
Monsters University earned $744 million, making it Pixar’s third highest grossing film, and Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World is still going strong at the box office earning $621.2 million so far. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen – which opened nationwide on November 27 – earned $93 million over five days during its opening weekend. To date the film has earned $268.5 million and has not yet opened internationally.
Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks opened nationwide on December 20 and is expected to continue the Studio’s winning streak.
