Walt Disney Studios Breaks $4 Billion at Global Box Office for the First Time in Studio History

For the first time in its history, The Walt Disney Studios broke the $4 billion mark at the global box office.

Earlier in November, the Studio had announced it surpassed the $3.791 billion mark that it set back in 2010. This year’s results have been driven by the success of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 which earned $1.21 billion making it the fifth highest grossing film ever.

Monsters University earned $744 million, making it Pixar’s third highest grossing film, and Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World is still going strong at the box office earning $559.1 million so far.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen – which opened nationwide on November 27 – had a huge opening weekend, earning $93 million over five days. Nearly $66.7 million came in Friday through Sunday.

The movie broke the record set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001 (which had earned $57.5 million and $82.4 million in a three- and five-day period over Thanksgiving weekend that year). Frozen also beat the box office numbers for Tangled, which grossed $68.1 million during its 2010 Thanksgiving debut.

The last movie for the Studios in 2013 is Saving Mr. Banks which opens in limited engagement on December 13 and goes nationwide on December 20.
