Bringing Buttercup and Westley to the stage is not so inconceivable after all.
Disney Theatrical Productions announced this week that plans are underway to develop a stage adaptation of William Goldman’s The Princess Bride. There is no word on whether it would be a musical or not.
Goldman’s epic tale of love between Buttercup and Westley first came to life in his 1973 book and was then adapted into the cult and fan-favorite 1987 film starring Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, and Billy Crystal.
The screenplay for the film was written by Goldman and he had attempted to collaborate with Tony Award-winning composer Adam Guettel (Light in the Piazza) to bring a musical version of The Princess Bride to life, but that ended in 2007.
Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn shepherded this new deal, but there is no word yet on who the creative team might be.
In a statement about the stage deal, Goldman said, “I am thrilled that the next chapter in the life of The Princess Bride will unfold on the stage. With Alan Horn, Thomas Schumacher and his team at Disney Theatrical Productions leading the way, Buttercup, Westley and all of Florin are in the best of hands.”
There is no word yet on when production might begin.
