Fans of Marvel’s The Avengers who didn’t want to imagine anyone other than Robert Downey Jr. playing the role of Iron Man can stop worrying. Marvel Studios announced last week that RDJ will be returning to the iconic role of billionaire superhero Tony Stark/Iron Man for the next two films in the Avengers series.
Downey has inked a two-picture deal for Marvel’s The Avengers 2 and Marvel’s The Avengers 3. His last two films with Marvel – 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and this year’s Iron Man 3 have earned a staggering $2.7 million worldwide, ranking them as two of the top grossing films of all time.
Noticeably absent from the film deal is any mention of Iron Man 4, leading some to wonder if this year’s third Iron Man film might be the last time we see Iron Man in a standalone film.
Marvel’s The Avengers 2 is set to begin production in March 2014 and is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. The film will feature characters from the first Avengers film and other Marvel characters that have never been seen on the big screen. The film is set to open in theaters on May 1, 2015.
