Visitors to Disneyland this weekend will have to enjoy the parks without some of the Resort’s major attractions, as several attractions have been temporarily shut down due to safety violations. Yesterday, a series of safety violation citations were issued to Disneyland by California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL/OSHA), prompting the ongoing closure of Space Mountain and Soarin’ Over California.
CAL/OSHA issued seven citations to Disneyland regarding Space Mountain, which were related to a 2006 agreement in which Disneyland agreed to safety improvements and inspections following several recent accidents. The violations include both minor infractions, such as inadequate fire extinguishers, to more serious ones like a lack of railings to prevent cast members from falling. A complete list of the violations can be found here. Failure to comply with these violations could result in penalties of over $230,000.
This situation is similar to when CAL/OSHA forced the shutdown of Disneyland’s Alice in Wonderland attraction in 2010. The attraction reopened one month later after installing temporary scaffolding with guardrails.
Though Space Mountain was the only attraction officially issued citations, Soarin’ Over California is currently closed as well following the CAL/OSHA inspections. In addition, Splash Mountain and the Matterhorn Bobsleds were initially shut down, but have since reopened. Disneyland has not officially commented on the attraction closures at this time, and there is currently no word on how soon the attractions will reopen.
