Now that the future Star Wars franchise has J.J. Abrams at the helm, both Disney and Lucasfilm have decided to postpone the 3D re-release of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
In a post on the official website, the company said:
Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.
When The Phantom Menace was released in theaters in 3D, the re-release grossed an impressive $22 million during its opening weekend. Now, the fate of the second films in the prequel trilogy – Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2015. Since J.J. Abrams has not officially committed to that release date yet, however, the date is subject to change.
