With Disney’s The Avengers breaking box office records – grossing $207.4 million in its opening weekend – it’s no surprise that Disney officially announced plans for a sequel yesterday.
After the disappointing profit loss from John Carter, Disney was counting on The Avengers to make up for it. It’s safe to say that this film, which has earned more than $700 million worldwide, has done just that.
When Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the sequel was already in development, he also spoke a bit about the success of the first film:
Obviously, it was helped a lot by the success of Iron Man movies and of Thor and Captain America. From The Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Avengers movie. So this one film that is immensely successful…is going to get a number of other films and franchises.
No official details have been released about the sequel, but you can be sure we’ll keep you updated when more news becomes available.
