The computer-animated film “Up” took five Oscar nominations this week, but at least a couple of them were surprising. The film is nominated for best animated feature film (expected) and also for best picture (not completely unexpected, but still an exceptional achievement). The Wall Street Journal is reporting Docter’s reactions: that he hopes that “Up’s” best picture nomination is part of a shift in the way that Hollywood sees animated films.
“I hope this means that Hollywood is seeing them as we see them,” he says. “We feel that these are films–we just happen to use computers to tell the story. They still have to reach out and touch people and bring different worlds and characters to the screen.”
Disney and Pixar pulled in quite a few Oscar nominations this week, including:
Up
Best animated feature film of the year
Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
Achievement in sound editing
Original Screenplay
Best Picture
The Princess and the Frog
Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
