Disney’s Box Office Hit “Alice in Wonderland” Reaches $1 Billion Benchmark

Tim Burton’s successful ‘Alice’ remake has brought Disney into a financial wonderland after it was announced today that the popular film has made over one billion dollars in box office receipts since the film’s debut. “Alice in Wonderland” now joins heavy-hitters “Titanic” and “Avatar” as the top three “non-sequel” films to reach a billion dollar benchmark, and also touts the title of biggest opening for a 3-D movie.

Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” debuted in March 2010 and also broke records right out of the gate by having the biggest March opening in the film industry’s history. Ticket sales in the United States topped over $332 million, and overseas ‘Alice’ is on the way to becoming Disney’s biggest performing film ever out of the United States. Overseas the movie has brought in $667 million, and still counting. Within the Disney family of movies only “Finding Nemo” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” have grossed more than Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

The U.S. release date for “Alice in Wonderland,” on both DVD and Blue-ray, is set for June 1st.
