‘Mary Poppins’ Becomes 30th Longest-Running Broadway Show

Yesterday afternoon brought an important milestone for the Broadway production of Mary Poppins. The show, which opened November 16, 2006, officially became the 30th longest-running show in Broadway history following its matinee performance on Saturday, July 16. Having officially played its 1,945th performance, the show surpassed the previous 30th longest-running show, Pippin.

Mary Poppins is produced on Broadway by Disney Theatricals in conjunction with legendary producer Cameron Mackintosh. The show features direction by Richard Eyre, with choreography and co-direction provided by Matthew Bourne. Music from the show includes both the film’s original music, written by Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman, as well as new songs and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The show’s book was written by Julian Fellowes.

Currently, Mary Poppins stars Ashley Brown in the title role, with Gavin Lee as Bert. Both of these stars originated their roles in the Broadway production, with Lee also originating the role of Bert in the show’s world premiere on London’s West End. Laura Michelle Kelly, who originated the title role in the London production, will return to the show July 19.

In addition to Mary Poppins, Disney also has the distinction of having two other productions on the list of longest-running Broadway shows. The Broadway production of The Lion King, which opened in 1997, is currently ranked as the seventh longest-running Broadway show, and Beauty and the Beast, Disney’s first Broadway show which ran from 1994-2007, is currently the eight longest-running show.

Mary Poppins is currently playing on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre, located 214 W 42nd Street. To purchase tickets and learn more about the show, visit www.disneyonbroadway.com.
