When Mark Peter Hughes penned the teen novel Lemonade Mouth, about an unlikely group of teenagers who meet in detention and decide to start a band, he had no idea the book would become not only a Disney Channel Original Movie, but a smash hit as well.
The teen novel chronicles the lives of five high school misfits who meet during detention and discover that, as unlikely as it seems, they all have one thing in common – a love of music. With this revelation, the teens form a band together and attempt to change the world with their music.
One of the prevailing themes in the novel, which then translates into the film, is the message of empowerment and reaching for your dreams. The teens all come from different backgrounds, and another important message Hughes wanted to impart on readers was that all families, whatever they are, should be celebrated.
Lemonade Mouth premiered on Disney Channel April 15 and immediately catapulted stars Bridgit Mendler, Hayley Kiyoko, Blake Michael, Adam Hicks, and Naomi Scott into the limelight. In fact, the Disney Channel original movie became cable’s number one original movie of the year in total viewers – 5.7 million tuned in to watch the film. Since then, Lemonade Mouth has had several encore presentations after its initial debut, and Hughes is already hard at work on a sequel to the novel.
Since the film’s debut, the stars have participated in many interviews and appearances, and one of the questions the cast seems to be asked most often is whether the TV band could hit the road for an actual tour. While Disney has not confirmed any tour plans at this point, the cast has been more than receptive to the idea and are up for anything.
A tour certainly doesn’t seem out of the question when you consider that the Lemonade Mouth soundtrack, which debuted April 12, quickly captured the number four spot on the Billboard 200 chart. In addition, the album took the number one spot on the iTunes soundtrack chart and the number one spot on Billboard’s Soundtrack and Children’s Music chart.
On May 2, several cast members from the film visited Studio Disney 365 in the Downtown Disney District for a very special appearance and fan giveaway. The stars participated in an exclusive Q&A session, hosted by Radio Disney personality Ernie D., and even gave 200 lucky guests the opportunity to receive a signed copy of the Lemonade Mouth soundtrack.
Finally, on May 7 the cast participated in a live video chat, which was hosted by Radio Disney on-air personality Jake Whetter. The live video chat enabled fans to send in their questions to the cast members, who would then pick the questions to answer on air. Four stars from the film, Bridgit Mendler, Hayley Kiyoko, Blake Michael, and Adam Hicks, participated in the live chat.
