Dumbo will be coming to The Walt Disney Family Museum this month, but there will also be plenty of classes and other activities, including a salute to Walt Disney Studios during World War II!
Screenings and Discussions
No one can resist the classic Disney film “Dumbo”, which will show all month long. Showings will take place daily at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. May 1-31, except Tuesdays and May 21 and 22. For tickets, visit www.waltdisney.org.
On May 21, join Walt Disney Family Museum historian and author Paul F. Anderson as he discusses Walt Disney’s contributions to the World War II effort in an exciting panel called “World War II: Fighting the War with Ink and Paint”. The discussion begins at 3 p.m., and tickets are available via www.waltdisney.org.
On May 22, the museum will host a screening of “Victory Through Air Power”, as well as a detailed account of the making of the film and a question and answer segment after the viewing. The show starts at 2 pm in the theater, and tickets can be purchased at www.waltdisney.org.
Music
An exciting musical event will be held May 15 at 4 p.m. in the Special Exhibition Hall. “Volti: A Musical Presentation” will showcase contemporary vocal music from around the world and features the skillful voices of Volti under the direction of founder and Artistic Director Robert Geary. Tickets are available at www.waltdisney.org.
Classes and Activities
On May 7, join the museum for “Inside the Studios: A Day in the Life of a Studio Member,” which offers an in-depth look at what it’s like to be a member of a studio team. This particular class will kick off with “the animator,” which will give you an inside look into what it’s like to be an animator. The event starts at 1 p.m. and lasts until 3 p.m., and is free with paid museum admission.
A followup to the introductory course, the May 21 class “Voice-over Class: Intermediate” will help students learn more information about the art of voice-over acting, including how to use their bodies as a tool to develop interesting character voices. Led by Disney voice-over artist Ned Lott, the course offers two workshops; one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The classes will be heldĀ in the Learning Center Media Studio and will cost $55 for members, $60 for non-members. Registration is required, so e-mail [email protected] or call 415.345.6814.
Disney Discoveries and Look Closer Series
On Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 22, celebrate Dumbo with a very special Disney Discoveries event! You’ll be able to create your own special feather that will help you take to the skies like Dumbo himself! The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Learning Center Arts Studio.
Finally, on May 28 and 29, “Look Closer: World War II Disney Insignias” will help you learn more about one of the artifacts in the galleries. Staff members will take you through a 5 to 8 minute gallery talk where they will reveal behind the scenes information, little known facts, and more. The event will be held at 3 p.m. in the lower lobby.
