In what is being called an “expansion” to the “Cars” world, Disney has announced that it will be producing an animated film called “Planes” in 2013.
Set to be released directly to Blu-ray and DVD, the film will follow the antics and adventures of entirely new cast of characters. Set to take center stage is Dusty, “a small town dreamer” – a crop duster, perhaps? – who sets his heart on competing in a trans-global air race – despite his fear of heights. Here’s what John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, had to say about the project:
“We had such a great time exploring the world of ‘Cars’ over the course of two films, so it seemed only natural for us to see where our imaginations would take us in a film where planes were the main characters. By expanding the Cars world, ‘Planes’ gave us a whole new set of fun-filled situations and a great opportunity to introduce some fantastic new characters. The team at DisneyToon Studios has done such an amazing job creating a heartfelt story filled with great comedy, adventure, and emotion. I know audiences are going to love taking off into the wild blue yonder with these daredevil characters, as they experience a whole new kind of animated adventure.”
Rather than being a sequel or a spin-off to “Cars,” which is set to have its own sequel, “Cars 2,” released in theatres this summer, “Planes” draws “inspiration” from the previous film.
